Another Super

Great evening checking the bees, the hive is very full so we have popped a super on.

Ive spent the last two weekends preparing the new pasture for the cattle. We are moving them on Sunday.

The potatoes in the ground have yielded really well.

Summertime

Doesn't time fly when your having fun.

The third week of July we attended the Southminster Flower Show with the smallholders group. What a lovely day out! Mum had managed to enter us in 17 classes between the handicraft and horticultural. We did really well.
Mum won a trophy for joint preserve champion. I won the novice handicraft class for my basket of wool. Dahlias won a first and second. Potatoes and raspberries got a second. Beetroot, strawberries and culinary herbs all won first place. A real achievement for both of us.

We collected the cows the following Monday, its great having them home, fingers crossed Tilly is in Calf this time. Dennis hasn't grown much taller, but his horns have a few more inches on them!

The garden is doing well, we have lots of potatoes, beans, cabbages and peas. Its so nice to be living off the land. Combined with a home grown chicken we had a lovely Sunday roast.

The bee's have arrived and are doing well, Dad is even interested in them. We managed to squeeze him in a bee suit last night although getting him out of it was a bit difficult! They have nearly drawn out and filler all the comb in the brood box.

We have walnuts pickling ready to store for the winter.

The pear trees have an abundance of fruit. I can see a lot of Perry making happening this autumn!

The time has come to start advertising our surplus meat. We have Oxford Down cross lamb, Oxford Sandy and Black Pork which will be ready in September/October and Bronze Turkey's for Christmas. So if anyone would like book some Furzedown Reared Meat please email me. Danielle.Perkins@Yahoo.co.uk.

Update

Doesn’t time fly, I'm sorry for my lack of posts. Its such a busy time of year.

We visited the South of England Show in early June with Gareth's parents, it was a lovely day out and great to see such a range of cattle and small scale producers of artisan produce. We found some delicious mead. I look forward to giving it a go when we have honey. Gareth has decided he wants to have a shire horse and some goats.

The shire horse is a no go at the moment so I suggested we could fit some goats in.

I managed to find some Angora Goats locally which I thought would be perfect I could use there fibre and Gareth could have his pets. However after going to see them, we decided they weren't for us. They needed to be sheared twice a year. So we are going to look at Golden Guernsey's, they are on the Rare Breed Survival Trust List.

The Blackwater Show was amazing, the largest stand I have organised so far, we made sausages, jam and chutney, bread, pressed apples, smoked bacon, as well as a section on wool, gardening and bee's. Not to mention all of our wonderful animals. Sheep, Goats, Pigs and a huge array of Poultry.

The haylage has been cut and bailed, we are just waiting on it to be delivered home. We had a great yield over 1200 small bales. We have also had Nanny's field cut, although it got rained on,its has bailed well and will at least feed the Dexter's for the winter.

The final incubator of Turkey eggs has hatched, they are such hard work, despite trying to get it humid enough we still struggled with only four hatching. The previous hatches we have had struggled with their legs splaying and ending up with us having to dispatch them. This time, I put carpet in the bottom of the brooder. The four that hatched weren't particularly strong, however touch wood two weeks on they are now strong healthy birds. I think I will do this all the time now.

I have also collected 15 chicks from Kelly Turkeys for Christmas. On my last count we had 33 turkey poults!

The lambs are all growing well, I'm hoping to try and have some skins tanned this year.

The vegetable garden is coming on well. We are enjoying the pakchoi and the soft fruit is ripening now. I am trying to collect the red currents before the birds eat them. I hope to make red currant jelly. The Slug X beer trap is working well, I think I have saved the garden from over 100 slugs now.

July will be as busy as June. Gareth and I are of to the Smallholders and Self Sufficiency show at the South of England Show Ground tomorrow. I am looking forward to it. I'm sure I will come home inspired to do more things.

We have another trip out for the Smallholders Group to the Southminster Flower Show on the 20th July.

I am also trying to arrange for the group to make and sell Jams and Chutneys. So my head is full of HACCP and labelling.

Time flies by

Where does time go?

I said after our wedding last September we are going to have an easy 2013! But I seem to be keeping the family busy!

Our freezers are so full, the lambs returned from the abattoir last weekend. They were very very nice hoggets. (A hogget is a sheep over 12 month of age) Lean and a great size.

Mum struggled taking them, couldn't look at the carcasses and even considered vegetarianism! But after a strong coffee and remembering why we raise our own animals: so they have a good life and aren't reared so intensively and stuffed full of medicines. We had a beautiful leg, we
are so lucky to be able to do what we do.

We finished the bee practical course and dropped off our first hive to be filled with bees. We took delivery of our fancy "Beesy" frames. They are made by a local bee keeper and have plastic corners that click together to make each frame .

We have real slug problems in the garden. They are eating everything. So i have set some beer traps.

We went to the South of England Show yesterday. A lovely day out with Gareths parents. Such a range of livestock. I nearly brought another fleece from a black wensleydale! But the lady in front of me beat me to it!

Gareth has decided we need some goats and a shire horse.

We also treated ourselves to a wool duvet that is 100% british. Its lovely. Wool keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer!

We spent the whole of today preparing for the Blackwater Country Show loading trailers. I think we are getting somewhere.

Finished off with a beautiful venison dinner!
